With Wren AI's dbt integration, your AI-powered business intelligence (GenBI) is now built directly on your dbt assets, guaranteeing:
- Truth and Governance: The models, and relationships defined in your dbt project become the single source of truth for all Wren AI GenBI features.
- Rich Context, Zero Effort: Wren AI automatically imports the invaluable documentation (model and column descriptions) you’ve already written in dbt, providing the context needed for the AI Assistant to generate highly accurate queries and insights.

Key Features of the dbt Integration
Our new dbt integration uses the Wren CLI to sync your local dbt project artifacts with Wren AI Cloud, transforming your data assets into AI-ready models.
What gets synced:
- Analytics-Ready Models: We focus on syncing your downstream models, ignoring staging and intermediate layers to keep your AI experience focused on final business concepts.
- Model and Column Descriptions: All descriptions from your dbt
manifest.json
are imported as rich metadata, improving NLQ accuracy. - Relationships: Relationships derived from your
manifest.json
and model tests are used to build the Wren MDL (Model Definition Language), giving the AI a comprehensive understanding of how your data tables connect. - Schema Details: The integration reads your
catalog.json
to extract essential column types.
How to Get Started
Setting up the integration is fast and simple using the Wren CLI:
- Install the Wren CLI.
- Prepare your dbt project: Run
dbt build
anddbt docs generate
to create the requiredmanifest.json
andcatalog.json
artifacts. - Sync your project: Use the
wren dbt create
command to import your dbt models into a new Wren AI project. - Keep it Current: Use
wren dbt update
to quickly synchronize any changes you make to your dbt project (like adding a new model or updating a description).

The Wren AI dbt integration is available today for data teams using:
